AI’s Impact on Election Integrity

Alex RutherfordBy Alex Rutherford2025-03-08

AI-generated disinformation and deepfakes are rapidly becoming a significant concern in the political arena. As more countries head into elections in 2024, the proliferation of AI-generated content threatens the integrity of democratic processes and public trust in information sources

The rise of AI-generated disinformation has made it increasingly difficult to distinguish between genuine and fabricated content. In Argentina, two presidential candidates used AI-generated images and videos to attack their opponents, while in Slovakia, deepfakes of a liberal pro-European party leader spread false information during the country’s elections (MIT Technology Review). This trend is concerning, especially in an already polarized political climate.

Generative AI has made creating realistic deepfakes and disinformation more accessible than ever, leading to a surge in misleading content. Even reputable sources might unknowingly share AI-generated material. Stock image marketplaces like Adobe’s have been flooded with AI-generated images purporting to depict real events, complicating efforts to maintain accuracy and reliability.

Efforts to combat AI-generated disinformation are in the early stages of development. Techniques like watermarks, such as those from Google DeepMind’s SynthID, offer some promise but are still largely voluntary and not entirely foolproof. Social media platforms also face challenges in quickly removing misinformation, making the battle against AI-generated fake news an ongoing struggle.

As AI-generated disinformation continues to spread, it’s crucial to develop robust methods to detect and mitigate its impact. The next year will be pivotal in shaping how we address the challenges posed by AI in the political landscape. Ensuring election integrity and public trust in information will require a concerted effort from technology companies, policymakers, and society at large.
